LeBron James didn’t fully grasp the significance of the opening ceremony when he first made the Olympic team in 2004. Now, he’s a main attraction.
Chosen by his fellow U.S. Olympians, James will carry the American flag at Friday night’s opening ceremony for the Paris Games. This makes him the third basketball player and the first male player to have this honor, following Dawn Staley in 2004 and Sue Bird in 2021.
The 39-year-old James got word of the honor Monday in London, just hours before the U.S. men’s team was set to play its final pre-Olympics exhibition game against World Cup champion Germany.
“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James said. “For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians, and so many people across the country with big aspirations. Sports have the power to unite us all, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”
U.S. star and first-time Olympian Stephen Curry stepped up for the U.S. men’s team, nominating LeBron James to be our flagbearer.
Curry in the nomination video stated, “We get how big of a deal this is, and honestly, Bron’s entire career—on and off the court—proves he’s the man for the job,”
“He’s shown what it means to be excellent, both in the game and in giving back to the community. His commitment to service and uplifting others is a lifelong passion, and his actions speak louder than words,” Curry added.
“Being chosen by your teammates to carry the flag is a huge honor. It’s a true reflection of LeBron’s passion for Team USA and his dedication to the game,” said U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee CEO Sarah Hirshland.
And with Bron leading the way, we know Team USA is in good hands. Let’s get it!
